JoHrw What an amazing album! Well worth the wait. Garlands did not disappoint. My absolute faves are Poor Relation, Great White Shark and Co-Optimist although every track is a winner. Definitely my best buy in 2022 which will stay with me well into 2023. Until their next release anyway! Favorite track: Poor Relation.

BigJimBassThing Fantastic debut indie album from Garlands. Superb harmonies on track Good Looks makes this my favourite track. Transports me back to 1986, with my dad giving me a pep talk as i head out the door on a hot summer evening. My other favourite track is This Is Where We Are. This song has me dancing along to the great guitar riffs and rythmic beats. Indie classic. Imagine I Was This Tall is packed full of brilliant songwriting. Has me Walking Back to Happiness in an emotional and melancholic way. Love Favorite track: This Is Where We Are.

Rita 03:53
We lived a month in a cul de sac Spent July on our knees Sifted through all the scenery And skipped the stuff we couldn’t keep Sorted out all the paperwork Painted over the cracks We flicked through family photographs And marvelled at what our parents had Now you, you know everything about me And me, I sit around watching you We found comfort in her captain’s chair Got a good price for the matching pair Boxed up all the crockery cause who knows maybe we’ll need it someday An ashtray beside the telephone A pair of gloves made of herringbone The window's open but the heating's on And everyone wants to go home Now you, you know everything about me And me, I sit around watching you You took her photograph Then she disappeared The only thing I can think of, And I’m doubting myself here Where did she go? Do you think it’s weird? To think there’s someone with you? Do you think there’s someone with you? Now you, you know everything about me And me, I sit around watching you

In your second day skin Talk to me Tell me where you’ve been In your second day skin Lie next to me I want to breathe you in In your second day skin In your second day skin Dance with me I want to hear you sing In your second day skin Stand next to me I want you to surrender To my second day skin I’ve never had patience I never had lots of money Exaggerate stories And none of my jokes are funny But I love you every day and night What is mine is yours and yours is mine All the time In your second day skin Talk to me Tell me where you’ve been In your second day skin Lie next to me I want to breathe you in In your second day skin Optimistically hopeful But not with a hippy ideal If you’re looking for answers Do you really need to know how I feel? But I love you every day and night What is mine is yours and yours is mine All the time In your second day skin

I always seem to let you down in your dreams Why is the dog looking at me pleading? Our room holds secrets only we've been keeping That’s how a kid sees it I slump into an old familiar low Why is it so complicated? Is simple overrated? The future won’t be how you planned it. You’ll never understand it There he is mocking my hairdo, what’s new? Making a comeback could be good for you. You can be anything that you wanna be That’s how a kid sees it I slump into an old familiar low Why is it so complicated? Is simple overrated? The future won’t be how you planned it. You’ll never understand it The future. Don’t plan, it’s useless. The future. Won’t shape your memory.

Sugar 03:59
Make her high Make her high Make her skate on thin ice Make her fall Make her fall Take a pound, take it all Find your way to my home Cross the grass on your own Find your way to my door Find yourself wanting more Has it always been this way? Has it always been too late? Shine some light Shine some light Make her whole, make it right Don’t play rough Don’t play rough Don’t be scared, get enough Find your way to my room Cross the hall, get here soon Find your way to my soul Find yourself swallowed whole Has it always been this way? Has it always been too late? Sugar

If you say it you should mean it Just let the words go If you believe it they’ll believe it We’ll take it real slow You say you’d like to disappear But where would we go if we leave here? If you feel it then reveal it Just let the line go Look in the heart of a Great White Shark When you open your eyes you’re afraid of the dark Now everything feels like it’s falling apart Great White Shark

Good Looks 04:04
Sleepyhead come back for summer I can’t dream without my lover holding onto me You Me You You could trace it back to me You could trace it back to me One of these days Your good looks gonna get you in trouble As you're heading out the front door One of these days Your good looks are gonna get you in trouble You won’t wave As you're heading out the front door Sing my name, it sounds like honey You think that I’m looking at you funny Not me At you Me You You could trace it back to me You could trace it back to me One of these days Your good looks gonna get you in trouble As you're heading out the front door One of these days Your good looks gonna get you in trouble You won’t wave As you're heading out the front door Good Looks...

You’ve been hiding the truth You’ve been hiding the truth from everyone You’ve been getting away with everything for way too long A poor relation to me A poor relation to everybody Take responsibility Say your sorry Face the things you’ve done Check your reality I'm not the enemy You say, “What can we do? Where can we go from here?” It’s too late to sit around You must take action now The world does not owe you a living You need to look outside You need an open mind You owe us this time You need to look outside You need an open mind You owe us your time My answer is this. Get up, get out and mow the lawn! Make your bed, get dressed and get on. Breathe and start again…. A poor relation to me A poor relation to everybody Take responsibility Say your sorry Fix the things you’ve done. Check your reality I'm not the enemy You say, “What can we do? Where can we go from here?” It’s too late to sit around You must take action now! The world does not owe you a living You need to look outside You need an open mind You owe us this time You need to look outside You need an open mind You owe us your time A poor relation to me A poor relation to me

Made Up 04:25
Tell me what do you see? Keep me safe in your dreams In the blink of an eye As we look to the sky Fit the width of a room And we all say goodbye You are beautiful to me now Here goes, the worry shows Shoot me when I’m too old In the blink of an eye As we look to the sky Fit the width of a room And we all say goodbye You are beautiful to me now We made up We made up Heave ho! And off we go! A hero nobody knows… In the blink of an eye As we look to the sky Fit the width of a room And we all say goodbye You are beautiful to me now We made up We made up

about

GARLANDS emerge into the dystopian hellscape of post-pandemic Scotland with their debut, 100% did-it-themselves, full-length LP; pop sensibilities firmly in place, though darkened somewhat by recent events.
Gordon: "the songs tell a bit of a story. Of sorts. No it’s not a concept album. But it starts with mourning the loss of a parent, ends with death and has desire, panic, obsession, bad dreams, hope, more hope, the curse of the father and family drama in between."
As always, GARLANDS are proudly wearing their influences on their sleeves, while bringing their own distinctive quirks and foibles to the table.
Gordon: "The last round of songs were inspired by our record collections. Now we had time on our hands, so for me, once the harmonies started to appear in my head, old favourites like The Byrds, The Bangles, Matthew Sweet, and Rubber Soul era Beatles were caught in the net with our familiar “husky” guitar sound and Stef's punk rock poundings."
